South King County Hub
Apartments in Kent, WA
Welcome to Kent, a diverse King County city in the Green River Valley—a major distribution hub with Sounder rail links to Seattle.
Kent sits in southern King County, Washington, about 20 miles south of downtown Seattle and roughly 10 miles southeast of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, in the broad Green River Valley between the Cascade foothills and Puget Sound. It is one of the largest municipalities in the Seattle metropolitan area, with about 136,000 residents, and one of its most diverse. Incorporated in 1890, Kent is the second-oldest city in King County after Seattle itself. The city's story begins with agriculture. Settled in the mid-19th century along the White and Green rivers, the valley became one of the region's most productive farm districts, and Kent rose to become the world's top producer of hops before an aphid outbreak devastated the crop in the 1890s. Japanese-American farmers were central to the valley's later agricultural economy, and their displacement during World War II left a lasting mark on the community. Over the second half of the 20th century, farmland steadily gave way to industry, and the valley floor became one of the Pacific Northwest's major warehousing, manufacturing, and distribution corridors. Today Kent is a dual-natured city: an industrial and logistics powerhouse on the valley floor and a large residential community on the surrounding hills. It is divided into West Hill, the valley, and East Hill, each with a distinct character, and its population reflects the region's increasing diversity. Kent School District, one of Washington's largest, serves local students across dozens of campuses. Transportation is a defining asset—Sounder commuter rail at Kent Station, nearby Link light rail, and State Route 167 and Interstate 5 connect the city to Seattle, Tacoma, and the airport. For families and workers seeking a diverse, well-connected south-county community with industrial-era roots and modern transit access, Kent occupies a central place in the Puget Sound region.
