Wilbur is a small town in Lincoln County, Washington, in the rolling dryland-wheat country of the Inland Northwest, about an hour west of Spokane along U.S. Route 2. The town was founded in 1887 by Samuel Wilbur Condit, for whom it is named, and incorporated in 1890. Originally known as Goosetown, the settlement grew with the spread of wheat farming across the surrounding Columbia Plateau, and its population peaked near 1,200 during the 1960s before settling at 895 in the 2020 census. Wheat has been the backbone of Wilbur's economy for most of its history, and the town has long functioned as a farm-service and commercial center for the surrounding agricultural district. Grain elevators, equipment dealers, and supporting businesses line the highway, serving the farms that stretch across the rolling hills in every direction. The town's location in the heart of the Palouse-adjacent wheat belt has kept it tied to the seasonal rhythms of planting and harvest for well over a century. Among its notable historical figures is Marion Hay, who settled in Wilbur in 1889 and went on to become Washington's seventh governor in 1909. Its position on U.S. Route 2 places it within about twenty minutes of Lake Roosevelt, the reservoir behind Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River, and roughly an hour from Spokane.
