Welcome to Twisp, a small town at the confluence of the Twisp and Methow rivers in Washington's Methow Valley — the state's smallest certified arts district and a gateway to North Cascade recreation.
Twisp is a small town in Okanogan County, in the north central part of Washington state, at the confluence of the Twisp and Methow rivers in the broad, sunny Methow Valley. The town sits in the foothills of the North Cascade Range, about 197 miles east of Seattle, along State Route 20, the North Cascades Highway that closes over the pass each winter. Twisp's origins lie in mining. Gold discoveries in the 1880s drew prospectors to the surrounding hills, and by 1897 the Twisp Mining District listed the Alder, Crescent, and Red Shirt mines. The Alder Mine went on to produce significant ore in the 1930s. As mining waned, timber and agriculture carried the local economy, and the town evolved into a service center for the Methow Valley. In recent decades Twisp has become known less for ore than for art. The town is Washington's smallest certified creative arts district, anchored by TwispWorks, a community campus of galleries, studios, and maker spaces housed in a converted forest-service complex. Methow Arts and the annual Arts Fest at Twisp River Park celebrate the valley's creative energy, and the town's farmers market and local breweries add to a lively, down-to-earth culture. Recreation is the other half of Twisp's identity. The Methow Valley is one of North America's premier cross-country ski destinations, with the Methow Trails network linking Twisp to Winthrop and Mazama, and Loup Loup Ski Bowl offers downhill skiing nearby. In warmer months, hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and fly fishing on the Methow and Twisp rivers draw residents and visitors. Twisp suits people who value outdoor access, a strong arts community, and small-town independence over urban convenience.
