Thurston County Stone Town

About Tenino, WA

Welcome to Tenino, a historic Thurston County town famed for its sandstone quarries and Depression-era wooden money, set about 15 miles south of Olympia.

Tenino is a small city in southern Thurston County, Washington, set along the old Highway 99 route about 15 miles south of Olympia, the state capital. It lies in the rolling prairie-and-woodland landscape of the southern Puget Lowland, between the developed Olympia-Tumwater-Lacey corridor to the north and the more rural stretches of Lewis County to the south. Interstate 5 runs a few miles to the east, reached via State Route 507, giving the town a convenient connection to the wider region. The community's identity is inseparable from its geology and its Depression-era ingenuity. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, Tenino's quarries produced a distinctive gray sandstone that was shipped across the Northwest and used in prominent buildings, including Olympia's Old Capitol Building, the old Thurston County Courthouse, and structures in Seattle, and even for the stone representing Washington at the Washington Monument in 1914. When the stone industry declined, the town adapted, and one abandoned quarry was later converted into a community swimming pool that remains a local landmark. Tenino gained national fame during the Great Depression, when the local chamber of commerce issued emergency "wooden money" scrip to ease a currency shortage. The scheme drew worldwide attention and made the town a footnote in American economic history, and the wooden currency remains a celebrated piece of local heritage, interpreted at the Tenino Depot Museum and the city's annual events. Today Tenino is home to roughly 1,900 people and functions as a quiet residential and agricultural community within commuting distance of Olympia. Its restored downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the community's schools, parks, and trails serve a population that values the town's history and small-town pace. Tenino offers a distinctive combination of preserved heritage, rural space, and practical access to the state capital.

City Guide

About Tenino

Real Estate & Housing

Tenino's housing is a mix of older in-town homes, mid-century single-family houses, and rural residential properties on larger parcels around the city's edges. The historic downtown area includes early-twentieth-century homes and buildings, while surrounding areas offer newer single-family construction, manufactured homes, and acreage. Compared with Olympia and the more densely developed north Thurston County communities, Tenino offers more space and a lower-density, small-town setting at a comparatively attainable price point, which draws buyers looking for room and quiet. The market is modest in scale and oriented toward families, first-time buyers, and those seeking rural residential property.

Neighborhoods

Tenino is a compact town organized around its National Register downtown along the old Highway 99 corridor. Residential streets of older and mid-century homes surround the commercial core, while the Tenino City Park, Depot Museum, and the historic quarry-pool sit at the town's edges. Beyond the incorporated limits, the surrounding countryside is dotted with larger residential parcels, small farms, and wooded acreage, giving the community a rural fringe. The town's small scale means most homes are within walking or biking distance of schools, the park, and downtown, and the overall feel is of a close, walkable historic community rather than a set of distinct subdivisions.

Lifestyle in Tenino

Life in Tenino is small-town and unhurried, anchored by a strong sense of local history and a close-knit community. The downtown's restored buildings, the Depot Museum, and annual events such as Oregon Trail Days celebrate the town's quarrying and pioneer heritage, while the community pool and city park anchor everyday recreation. Residents value the quiet, walkable scale of the town and its access to the surrounding countryside, while Olympia's employment, shopping, and cultural amenities are a short drive north. Tenino appeals to families, commuters, and those seeking a historic, rural-flavored town that remains within reach of the state capital region.

Schools & Education

Public education in Tenino is provided by the Tenino School District, a small K–12 district serving the town and its surrounding rural area. The district operates Parkside Elementary School for grades K–2, Tenino Elementary School for grades 3–5, Tenino Middle School for grades 6–8, and Tenino High School for grades 9–12, keeping students within the community from kindergarten through graduation. The district's scale reflects the town's size, and its schools are a focal point of community life. For higher education, South Puget Sound Community College and The Evergreen State College in Olympia are reachable within a short drive.

Getting Around

Tenino sits along the historic old Highway 99 corridor and is reached from Interstate 5 via State Route 507 at the county's southern edge. Olympia is about 15 miles north, a drive of roughly 20 minutes, while Centralia and Chehalis lie to the south along I-5. The town has no passenger rail station of its own, but Amtrak service is available in Centralia and Olympia-Lacey, and commuters largely rely on the I-5 corridor. This location gives Tenino residents a practical commute to the state capital and its employment centers while keeping the town itself removed from the heavier traffic of the more urbanized north Thurston County.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation in Tenino centers on Tenino City Park, a roughly 115-acre site that includes ballfields, open space, the Tenino Depot Museum, and the historic Ticknor School building. The community swimming pool, built in a former sandstone quarry, is one of the town's most distinctive features and a summer gathering place. The city's Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture program coordinates events and facilities, and the surrounding countryside offers opportunities for walking, cycling, and exploring the rural Thurston County landscape. Nearby, the Chehalis Western Trail and Millersylvania State Park provide additional trails, camping, and lake access within a short drive, while the capital city's amenities are about 20 minutes north.
