Hood Canal Waterfront Community

Apartments in Seabeck, WA

Seabeck is a rural unincorporated community on the western shore of Hood Canal, a former lumber mill town framed by the Olympic Mountains.

Seabeck is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Kitsap County, Washington, on the western shore of Hood Canal, the long, fjord-like waterway that separates the Kitsap Peninsula from the Olympic Peninsula. The community's 2010 census population was 1,105, and it functions as a quiet, rural residential area with sweeping views across the water to the Olympic Mountains. The land around Seabeck was long inhabited by the region's Indigenous peoples, who knew the area by the name L-Ka-bak-hu. Seabeck's modern history begins in 1856, when Marshall Blinn sailed into the bay seeking a site for a lumber mill. The Washington Mill Company that he and his partners formed turned Seabeck into a booming timber town, shipping lumber down the coast to San Francisco. Several homes built beginning in 1856 for the mill's management still stand and are now part of the Seabeck Conference Center, which was established by the Seattle YMCA in 1915 and became an independent nonprofit in 1936. The center's 90 acres preserve the historic mill-town core as a retreat and gathering place. Today Seabeck is known less for industry than for its natural setting and recreation. Scenic Beach State Park, a 121-acre park with 1,500 feet of Hood Canal shoreline, offers camping, beach access, and spring rhododendron displays, while the canal itself supports kayaking, boating, and seasonal shellfish harvesting. The community is served by the Central Kitsap School District, with the former Seabeck Elementary School now designated as the site of a future community center. Seabeck appeals to those seeking a rural, waterfront lifestyle on Hood Canal within reach of Bremerton's ferry to Seattle and the services of Silverdale. Its forested lots, historic character, and unobstructed mountain views distinguish it from the more suburban parts of Kitsap County.
