Royal City is a small city in Grant County, in central Washington, set within the irrigated farm country of the Columbia Basin. With a population of 1,776 at the 2020 census, it is a working agricultural community whose landscape of orchards, row crops, and vineyards was made possible by one of the largest irrigation projects in the western United States. The city's modern character is rooted in the Columbia Basin Project, a federal undertaking that began early in the 20th century and ultimately delivered Columbia River water to the dry plateau of central Washington. Before irrigation, the area was largely sagebrush steppe; afterward, it became productive farmland supporting a diversified agricultural economy. Today the land around Royal City produces cherries, apples, potatoes, asparagus, and wine grapes, along with livestock, and agriculture and food processing anchor the local economy. Royal City functions as the service center for a large surrounding farming district. The Royal School District, which operates five schools from preschool through grade 12, serves a broad rural area and stands as a central institution for families across the region. The town's location, roughly 17 miles east of the Columbia River's Vantage Bridge, places it within reach of the river, Interstate 90, and the larger communities of Moses Lake and the Tri-Cities. For residents, Royal City offers an authentic small-town, agricultural way of life. The Saddle Mountains, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, rise to the south and provide trails for hiking, horseback riding, and off-road recreation, while the Columbia River and its reservoirs offer fishing and boating nearby. It is a community defined by farming, open space, and the distinct contrast between green irrigated fields and the high-desert landscape that surrounds them.
