Quilcene is a small, unincorporated community in eastern Jefferson County, Washington, set at the head of Quilcene Bay, an arm of the seawater-filled Hood Canal that cuts into the Olympic Peninsula. The community is framed by the Olympic Mountains to the west and the waters of Hood Canal to the east, a setting that defines both its economy and its way of life. The area's economic history runs through timber and mining. A shingle mill was a major local employer around 1910, and early-twentieth-century promoters briefly claimed Quilcene would become a smelting center for ore from the Olympic Mountains, though little ore was ever found.
