Peshastin is an unincorporated community in Chelan County, Washington, on the floor of the Wenatchee River Valley in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Range. It sits along U.S. Route 2, midway between Wenatchee to the southeast and the Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth to the northwest, with roughly 1,500 residents. Though small and unincorporated, Peshastin is a distinct, working agricultural community rather than a suburb. The settlement took shape in 1892, when the Great Northern Railroad reached the valley and irrigation made orchard agriculture possible. Fruit warehouses and a box factory soon anchored the local economy, and Peshastin became known for producing high-quality pears in the dry, sunny climate of the Wenatchee Valley. That orchard tradition continues: family-run fruit stands and pear, apple, and cherry orchards still line the valley, and in recent years some acreage has been converted to wine grapes, with several estate wineries opening nearby. The landscape is Peshastin's defining feature. To the west rise the Cascades; to the east, sage-covered hills drop toward the Columbia River basin. Peshastin Creek and the Wenatchee River drain the valley, and the striking sandstone formations of Peshastin Pinnacles State Park rise above the orchards on the town's edge. Life here is quiet and tied to the land. Residents have a single public school, Peshastin-Dryden Elementary, at the heart of the community, and rely on nearby Leavenworth and Wenatchee for shopping, dining, and services. Link Transit buses connect Peshastin to both, and Highway 2 provides the main corridor for commuting and recreation. Peshastin suits people drawn to orchard country and outdoor access — hiking and climbing at the Pinnacles, the Wenatchee River, and the recreation of Leavenworth and Lake Wenatchee nearby — with a lower profile and more space than the better-known towns around it.
