Columbia River Confluence Town
Apartments in Pateros, WA
Welcome to Pateros, a small Okanogan County city at the confluence of the Columbia and Methow rivers, where Lake Pateros and the eastern Cascades frame everyday life.
Pateros is a small city in Okanogan County, in north-central Washington, set at the confluence of the Columbia and Methow rivers in the foothills of the eastern Cascade Range. Its population was 593 at the 2020 census, and the town occupies a compact footprint along the Cascade Loop Scenic Highway, about 60 miles northeast of Wenatchee and roughly 80 miles south of the Canadian border. Pateros sits in the orchard country of the Okanogan Valley, a region long associated with apple and other tree-fruit production. The town's identity is inseparable from the water. The stretch of the Columbia River adjacent to Pateros, impounded as the 20-mile-long Lake Pateros reservoir, gives the city its recreational character and its setting. The City of Pateros maintains five riverfront parks and two boat launches, and warm months bring boating, water-skiing, wakeboarding, rafting, and jet skiing to the river. Alta Lake State Park, about three miles away, adds swimming, fishing, and a hiking trail that climbs partway up Billy Goat Mountain for views over the Methow and Columbia valleys. Life in Pateros is unhurried and oriented toward the river. The Pateros School District serves the town through a small system of three schools and roughly 230 students, and community institutions such as the Pateros Museum and Visitor Information Center at the river confluence tell the town's history. Services and larger employers are concentrated in Wenatchee and the surrounding Okanogan Country towns, while the Cascade Loop and nearby U.S. Highway 97 connect Pateros to the broader region. The result is a community that functions as both a working orchard town and a gateway to Columbia River recreation, defined by open water, orchards, and the mountain backdrop that frames daily life.
