Odessa is a small town in Lincoln County, Washington, set on the rolling dryland wheat plateau of the eastern Palouse, a broad open country between the Columbia River coulees and the Spokane area. The landscape is defined by wheat fields, grain elevators, and long horizons, with the town's neat residential grid rising out of the surrounding farmland. Ritzville lies to the southeast, Harrington and Davenport to the north, and Spokane is about 65 miles to the northeast. The town's origins trace to 1886, when German immigrants—chiefly Volga Germans and Black Sea Germans who had farmed in Russia for generations—began settling the area. Seeking relief from increasing taxes and military service in Russia, they established a wheat-farming community that was platted in 1899 by George W. Finney and incorporated on September 25, 1902. It was named Odessa for the Russian port city from which many of the settlers had emigrated, and that heritage remains central to the town's identity. Wheat is Odessa's economic foundation. The surrounding country is dryland farmed—grown without irrigation—and the town's grain elevators and farm-supply businesses anchor the local economy. The annual harvest still sets the community's rhythm, with grain moving through local cooperatives each summer and fall. Odessa is perhaps best known outside the region for Deutschesfest, its annual German heritage festival. Held each September, the event fills the downtown with an oompah band, German sausage and pastries, a beer garden, a parade, and a street fair, and it culminates in the "Sausage Bowl" high school football game. With roughly 900 residents, Odessa offers a tight-knit, rural way of life, a small K–12 school, and a nine-hole golf course, all within a drive of Spokane's larger services. For residents and newcomers alike, Odessa represents a distinctly Eastern Washington community—agricultural, family-centered, and proud of its German-Russian roots.
