Normandy Park is a city in King County, Washington, on the Puget Sound shoreline about 30 minutes south of Seattle. The city is bounded by Burien to the north and Des Moines to the south, and it counted 6,771 residents in the 2020 census. The community's modern form took shape in the mid-20th century. Population estimates in the early 1950s placed the community at just under 1,600, and in March 1953 a hearing was set to discuss incorporation. The Normandy Park Community Club encouraged incorporation as a way to maintain local control over the area's character, and the city was formally incorporated in June 1953. Normandy Park is known for its green, wooded residential character and its shoreline. The city's western edge runs along Puget Sound, where Marine View Park, Marvista Park, the Cove, and Walker Preserve provide waterfront access and views across the Sound to the Olympic Mountains. Mature trees and established neighborhoods define the residential streets. Students attend Highline Public Schools, with Marvista Elementary School located within the city. Normandy Park's location places Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and the employment centers of the South Sound within a short drive, while its low-density, waterfront setting gives it a distinctly quieter feel than its larger neighbors. Community events such as a summer concert series, a Fourth of July celebration, the Normandy Park Arts Festival, and food-truck gatherings add to the city's small-town character. Its hillside streets offer glimpses of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, reinforcing the sense of place that defines Normandy Park as a sought-after residential enclave south of Seattle.
