I-5 Corridor Town in Lewis County

Apartments in Napavine, WA

Welcome to Napavine, a Lewis County town beside Interstate 5 between Seattle and Portland, with a timber-railroad past and a small-town present.

Napavine is a city in Lewis County, Washington, set on a hill beside Interstate 5 roughly halfway between Seattle and Portland. The town's name traces to the region's Indigenous past—settlers recorded it as a version of a word for "small prairie"—and its history runs through the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1872. Timber and rail built the early community: by 1908 Napavine had nine lumber and shingle mills, several general stores and three hotels, and the railroad depot stood at the highest elevation on the line between Portland and Seattle. Napavine was platted in 1883 and incorporated in 1913. The timber and railroad economies eventually receded, and Napavine settled into a quieter role as a small residential community serving the surrounding valley. Today it functions largely as a bedroom community for the Centralia-Chehalis area and Olympia, with Interstate 5 putting both larger job markets within reach. The 2020 census counted 1,888 residents, and the city's households lean toward families with children. Napavine's identity rests on its schools and its community events. The Napavine School District operates an elementary school and a combined middle-high school, and the Napavine Tigers carry a proud small-school athletic tradition. The annual Funtime Festival, held since the 1970s, and a long-running Christmas parade anchor the civic calendar. A cluster of neighborhood parks—Napavine Community Park, Robert Cook Day Park and Mayme Shaddock Park—provides everyday recreation. The city's position on a hill about 450 feet above the valley gives many homes views over the surrounding farmland and forests, while the Cowlitz River valley and the southern Cascades lie within easy reach.
