Seattle-Metro Rail Suburb

Apartments in Mountlake Terrace, WA

Welcome to Mountlake Terrace, a compact Snohomish County city about 13 miles north of Seattle, linked to the city by light rail and framed by Lake Ballinger.

Mountlake Terrace sits just over the Snohomish County line, about 13 miles north of downtown Seattle, on the broad suburban corridor that runs along Interstate 5. It is a mid-century community by origin: in 1949, developers Albert LaPierre and Jack Peterson purchased an abandoned airfield on logged-over land and began building compact, affordable homes aimed at World War II veterans and their young families. The name came from the property's vantage point, from which both Mount Rainier and Lake Washington were visible, and from the terrace-like grade of the old runway. The city incorporated in 1954. That postwar DNA still shapes the city today. The housing stock skews modest and practical rather than sprawling, and the community reads as a close-in, first-ring suburb rather than a far-flung exurb. Mountlake Terrace borders Shoreline to the west and Lynnwood to the north, so residents draw on the retail, medical, and civic amenities of all three communities while keeping a distinct local identity of their own. The city's compact footprint makes it unusually walkable for the Seattle metro. A redeveloped Town Center clusters civic buildings, a transit center, and shops around the city's core, while Lake Ballinger forms a quiet recreational edge on the city's west side. Commuters benefit from direct access to the regional light-rail network, which puts downtown Seattle, the University District, and Sea-Tac within reach without a car. Mountlake Terrace appeals to a broad mix of residents: first-time buyers drawn to relatively approachable housing near the urban core, families anchored by the Edmonds School District, and commuters who want rail access without living in central Seattle. Its scale is human, its history is specific, and its location offers a genuine shortcut into the region's job centers.
