Washington Coast Beach Town
Apartments in Moclips, WA
Welcome to Moclips, a small Grays Harbor County beach community with a rich early-20th-century resort history.
Moclips is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Grays Harbor County, Washington, on the Pacific coast north of Hoquiam. The 2020 census recorded 211 residents. The community sits on a stretch of wide ocean beach between Pacific Beach to the south and the Quinault Indian Reservation to the north, with the Moclips River running through it to the sea. Moclips has a storied history as a Washington coast resort. Homesteaders settled the area as early as 1862, but the community took off in 1905 with the completion of the Northern Pacific Railway and the opening of the first Moclips Beach Hotel, a 150-room oceanfront resort built by Dr. Edward Lycan. After that hotel burned, Lycan rebuilt an even grander version in 1907, reportedly containing between 270 and more than 300 rooms, making it one of the most ambitious coastal resorts on the Washington coast. In its heyday, Moclips offered restaurants, hotels, a theater, a candy store, canneries, and a lumber mill, all served by rail from the interior. The resort era faded as rail service and the grand hotel declined, and Moclips settled into a quieter life as a beach community of homes and vacation rentals. Today it is known for its wide, uncrowded beaches and its proximity to the natural attractions of the Olympic Peninsula. Students in Moclips attend the North Beach School District. The community lies a short drive from Lake Quinault, the Quinault Rain Forest, and the approaches to Olympic National Park, and the nearby planned beach community of Seabrook adds dining, shops, and summer events just to the south.
