Gateway to North Cascades
Apartments in Marblemount, WA
Welcome to Marblemount, the small Skagit County community on the upper Skagit River that serves as the western gateway to North Cascades National Park.
Marblemount is a small census-designated place in Skagit County, Washington, set on the upper Skagit River where State Route 20 bends toward the mountains. With roughly 300 residents, it is the last substantial services stop on the west side of the North Cascades Highway before the national park complex, and it functions as the western gateway to North Cascades National Park. Present-day Marblemount was the site of an indigenous village when naturalist George Gibbs explored the region in 1858, and the community grew around the river corridor and the mining, logging, and prospecting activity that once moved through the upper Skagit country. Today Marblemount's identity is defined almost entirely by its mountain setting. The North Cascades National Park Wilderness Information Center is located in town, making it a natural base for hikers, climbers, paddlers, and anglers heading into the park's glacier-carved peaks and valleys. The Skagit River, known for its whitewater, runs past the community, and outfitters based here lead rafting trips through the surrounding scenery. The Cascade River Road leaves the highway near town and climbs toward the Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm trailheads. Despite its small size, Marblemount offers a general store and visitor services, and it draws both seasonal visitors and a year-round community tied to the outdoors and to the broader Skagit Valley. Its setting is remote and forested, with the Skagit Valley's farms and small towns to the west and the mountain wilderness to the east. Life here suits those who prioritize direct access to wild country over urban convenience, with day-to-day needs met in nearby Concrete, Rockport, or the larger towns downriver.
