Washington Coast Cranberry Community

Apartments in Grayland, WA

Welcome to Grayland, a small Grays Harbor County community on the Pacific Coast, where cranberry bogs meet miles of sandy beach south of Westport.

Grayland is a census-designated place in Grays Harbor County, Washington, on the Pacific Coast in the southwestern corner of the county. Home to about 850 residents, it lies just south of the city of Westport, with the Pacific Ocean to the west and miles of sandy shoreline along its edge. The community is defined by cranberries. The crop took root here after settlers discovered native cranberries growing in the coastal bogs, and Grayland became the center of Washington's cranberry industry. In 1957, Grayland resident Julius Furford invented the Furford Picker/Pruner, a machine that picked ripe berries while pruning the vines, helping shape the modern harvest. The Cranberry Museum and gift shop in town preserves this history and documents the harvesting process for visitors, and the low, neatly bordered bogs remain a defining feature of the landscape. Grayland's other defining feature is its beach. Grayland Beach State Park, a 581-acre camping park just south of the community, offers oceanfront camping, beachcombing, and razor clamming within Washington's Seashore Conservation Area. Surfing and watersports events take place in the area, and the nearby Westport harbor adds charter fishing and a working marina. Students in Grayland attend the Ocosta School District, which also serves Westport, Cohassett Beach, Markham, and Tokeland. Much of the community retains the feel of an earlier era, its early cottages gradually joined by larger homes. For homebuyers, Grayland offers a quiet, ocean-side lifestyle among cranberry bogs and dunes, a distinctive blend of working agriculture and coastal recreation on Washington's outer coast.
