Grapeview is a census-designated place in Mason County, Washington, set along the western shore of Case Inlet, one of the southern arms of Puget Sound. Its 2020 population was 991. The community sits in a wooded, waterfront landscape across from the Kitsap Peninsula, and its identity is closely tied to the water and to the small islands and coves that define the inlet. The area was first settled in the pioneer era — Lambert Evans, a Confederate veteran, became Grapeview's first settler in 1872 — and the community was once known as Detroit before taking its present name. For decades, transportation along Case Inlet moved by steamboat, with small boats serving the scattered waterfront communities from the 1870s into the 1920s. Grapeview's most distinctive legacy is the grape-growing industry that developed on nearby Stretch Island. Early plantings there helped the inlet earn a reputation in the mid-1920s as the "grape belt of Washington," and the island was home to the state's first bonded winery. Today Grapeview is a residential waterfront community, with homes strung along the shoreline and on wooded inland parcels.
