Cascade Gateway on the Skykomish
Apartments in Gold Bar, WA
Welcome to Gold Bar, a small Snohomish County city along the Skykomish River, where the Cascade foothills begin and U.S. 2 leads to Wallace Falls and Stevens Pass.
Gold Bar is a city in Snohomish County, Washington, located in the Skykomish Valley along the Skykomish River in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Home to about 2,400 residents, it sits roughly 30 miles east of Everett and 40 miles west of Stevens Pass, making it one of the gateway communities to the Cascades along the U.S. Highway 2 corridor. The town's history is tied to the mountains and the river. The Skykomish people inhabited the valley before American settlement, and the first recorded visits by survey parties came in 1859 and 1860. Prospectors traveling through the area in 1869 reported finding traces of gold along the banks of the Skykomish River, giving Gold Bar its name. The community grew as a mining and railway camp before it was platted in 1900 and incorporated in 1910. Today that frontier past survives mainly in the town's name and its continuing identity as a jumping-off point for the outdoors. Gold Bar's modern character is quiet and residential, with a suburban-rural mix and a strong majority of owner-occupied homes. The population is relatively young, with a median age in the mid-thirties. The community is served by the Sultan School District, with Gold Bar Elementary School in town for younger students, while older students attend schools in nearby Sultan. Recreation defines much of daily life: Wallace Falls State Park draws hikers to its series of waterfalls on the Wallace River, and U.S. 2 continues east toward the ski slopes and trails of Stevens Pass. For homebuyers, Gold Bar offers a small-town, nature-focused lifestyle within commuting distance of Everett and the broader Puget Sound region, making it a fit for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking mountain foothill living with access to both river recreation and Cascade backcountry.
