Glenoma is a small, unincorporated community in Lewis County, Washington, located in the upper Cowlitz River valley along U.S. Route 12. It sits between the towns of Morton and Randle, in the foothills of the Cascade Range in the southwest part of the state. The community is surrounded by the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, a vast expanse of more than 1.3 million acres that includes Mount Adams and the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. Glenoma has a distinctive settlement history. Many of its early residents came from the Appalachian South, and the community earned the nickname "Little Kentucky" as a result. That heritage is part of the local identity, though today Glenoma is known mainly as a quiet, forest-adjacent community in a region devoted to timber, recreation, and rural living. The community is one of a string of small places along U.S. Route 12 as the highway climbs from the lowlands toward White Pass. Glenoma has a small county park that anchors local gatherings, while school-age children attend schools in the White Pass School District based in nearby Randle. The Cowlitz River flows through the valley, and Riffe Lake, formed by Mossyrock Dam, lies downstream to the west. Glenoma's appeal is its proximity to the outdoors. The Gifford Pinchot National Forest offers hiking, hunting, fishing, and camping, while Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier are within reach. Randle, a few miles east, is a recognized gateway to the Mount St. Helens area. For residents, Glenoma offers a secluded, forested setting with easy access to the recreational lands of the southern Cascades.
