Colville is a city in Stevens County, Washington, and the seat of a county that stretches north to the Canadian border in the northeastern corner of the state. With a population of about 4,920, it is the largest city in Stevens County and the region's principal commercial and service center. The city's name carries deep regional history. It recalls Fort Colvile, the Hudson's Bay Company fur-trading post established near Kettle Falls on the upper Columbia River in 1825, and later the U.S. Army's Fort Colville, which operated from 1859 to 1882 as the district was opened to settlement.
