Chehalis is a city in southwest Washington and the seat of Lewis County, located along Interstate 5 roughly midway between Seattle and Portland. The community's development turned decisively in 1873, when the Northern Pacific Railroad reached the area, connecting the settlement to regional markets and cementing its role as a hub for the surrounding farm and timber country. Chehalis takes its name from the Chehalis people and the river system that defines the region. About 7,800 residents live in the city today.
