Columbia River Dam Town
Apartments in Bridgeport, WA
Welcome to Bridgeport, a Douglas County city on the Columbia River just below Chief Joseph Dam, where orchards and hydroelectric power anchor the local economy.
Bridgeport is a city in Douglas County, Washington, set along the Columbia River in the north-central part of the state, about a mile and a half below Chief Joseph Dam. With roughly 2,100 residents, it is part of the Wenatchee–East Wenatchee metropolitan area and a small but enduring river community in the heart of Washington's orchard country. The area's history begins in the late 19th century, when the settlement that became Bridgeport was founded under the name Westfield. Some of the earliest arrivals were Chinese miners extracting gold from the banks of the Columbia River. For decades the community remained a quiet farm and orchard town, drawing on the rich soils of the Columbia Basin and the river that runs along its edge. Bridgeport's defining moment arrived in the 1950s, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Chief Joseph Dam just upriver, completing the project in 1955. The dam brought workers, investment, and a new economic foundation to the town, and it remains one of the largest hydroelectric facilities in the United States, with a 2,039-foot powerhouse and 27 generators. The reservoir formed behind the dam created new recreational opportunities at the city's doorstep. Today Bridgeport's economy rests on the dam and on the surrounding orchards and farms that define the region. The Bridgeport School District serves local students across four schools, and Bridgeport State Park, on the dam-formed reservoir, draws campers and boaters. State Route 17 runs through the area, connecting Bridgeport to Wenatchee to the south and the Grand Coulee region to the northeast. For its residents, Bridgeport offers a quiet, largely owner-occupied community where the Columbia River, the dam, and the orchards shape everyday life.
