Battle Ground sits in northern Clark County, Washington, northeast of Vancouver and within commuting distance of the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area across the Columbia River. With a population of about 20,700 at the 2020 census, it is one of Clark County's larger cities and has absorbed much of the region's suburban growth while retaining a foothill, small-town identity. The city's unusual name traces to 1855, when a group of Klickitat people encamped near a planned confrontation with troops at Fort Vancouver. A peaceful resolution avoided any fighting, and the site became remembered for the battle that never occurred, giving the future town its name. The surrounding plains were used by the Hudson's Bay Company and later the U.S. Army for pasture before settlers began establishing the community in the late nineteenth century.
